Advertising
Introduction
In order to get a large amount of traffic to your comic, you will probably need to spend some money on paid advertising at some point. First, you will need a banner. Joel Fagin has a nice article on making a banner, so I won't repeat it here. After that, you will need a place to put your banner. The service most people use is Project Wonderful (Google AdWords is another option, but tends to be more expensive). There are also a number of comic-related websites that run their own advertisements.
Project Wonderful
Project Wonderful works on an infinite auction system. You place a bid and your banner is displayed as long as you are the highest bidder. Skyscraper and Leaderboard ads tend to do better than buttons, so stick with those. Also, even though prices are given in cost per day, you are actually billed for each minute your ad is displayed. This means you can bid on a slot priced at $24 per day, set your maximum spending limit to $1, and your banner will be displayed for one hour. A short amount of time on a high traffic site will get you more hits than an entire day on a low traffic site.Independent Advertising
If you would rather not use a large service with a bidding system, there are many places that run their own ads. These are usually done at a flat rate for a certain amount of time, or using cost-per-click. There is a good list of independent comic advertisers at Emergency Exit Comics.
